Tallahassee is a city of 199,696 people, according to the Census Bureau’s 2023 American Community Survey five-year estimates, in Leon County. Its neighborhoods spread out from the Capitol and downtown in every direction. Interstate 10 crosses the north side of the city, with exits at Capital Circle Northwest (196), North Monroe Street (199), Thomasville Road (203) and Mahan Drive (209). North of the interstate, much of the land is unincorporated Leon County, even where the mailing address says Tallahassee.

Three things to know before you compare areas:

  • City limits are irregular. The county’s address map shows city and county addresses side by side in several areas in this guide, and some city services stop at the line. Our who to call at City Hall guide lists the city’s numbers.
  • ZIP codes are big. Tallahassee has about a dozen, and most of them cover several of the areas below, so a ZIP code’s home value is a rough guide to any one neighborhood.
  • School zones do not follow city limits. Leon County Schools runs every public school in the county, and its zones cross the city line. Check any address with the district’s School Zone Lookup.

How we built this

We used only areas that an official map or OpenStreetMap names and bounds:

  • The city’s neighborhood registry (the Open Neighborhoods layer on Tallahassee-Leon County GIS) for Frenchtown, All Saints, Midtown, Myers Park, Betton Hills and Killearn. The registry lists about 590 neighborhood and homeowner associations in the city and county; we chose areas large or well known enough to be searched by name. Two of the six associations, Midtown and All Saints, are now listed as inactive, but their mapped areas remain.
  • City and county planning maps for Downtown (the Downtown Overlay of the Multimodal Transportation District), the Southside (the Southside Action Plan area, Map 8 of the comprehensive plan), SouthWood (a development of regional impact) and Bradfordville (the Bradfordville Study Area, Map 3).
  • OpenStreetMap, which marks All Saints, College Town, Southwood and Bradfordville as named places and was the source for the store lists.

Address counts, ZIP code shares and school zone shares come from Leon County’s address point layer checked against each boundary. We left out areas we could not place on a map with a source, and we do not name individual subdivisions. Distances on each page are measured on the road network with the OSRM routing engine, not drive times.
